Street Trees
A Street tree is typically located within the first 5 feet of a front yard area, behind a sidewalk, or is located between the sidewalk and street. The Urban Forestry Division maintains an inventory of Street trees citywide. A permit is required to remove a Street tree. A form is required to plant a new Street tree.
Cost
Permit fee to Remove a Non-Heritage Street Tree: $0
Fee to Plant a New Street Tree: $0
Timeline
Typical Time to Receive Permit to Remove: 30 days
If the Street tree removal is associated with construction activity in a building permit, then City Staff will review the tree removal permit in tandem with the building permit.
Process
For a Street Tree Removal Permit
1. Submit your Non-Heritage Street Tree Removal Permit application by email at trees@mountainview.gov.
2. Once an application is received, City Staff will schedule and conduct an on-site inspection with a City Arborist within 2 weeks. Following an inspection, the City Arborist will make a determination.
Note: If an alternative design of the project can retain a City Street tree and allow property improvement, the City can require retention of the Street tree.
3. Upon making a final determination on the application, the City Arborist will send notification of the decision to the property owner and post it on the City website. Additionally, a notice will be posted on the tree(s) proposed for removal for a minimum of 10 days following the final decision.
For Planting a New Street Tree
1. Email the following information to trees@mountainview.gov:
- Contact Info: Name, address & phone number
- Species of tree desired
- Location on property where tree will be planted
For Planting a New Street Tree Associated with a Building Permit
1. Submit a completed New Street Tree Form with your building permit application at ePermitsMV.
2. As part of the building permit review, a City Arborist will review the form and verify the new tree species and location is appropriate on the building plans. Any comments or corrections will be included in the City's response on the building plans.
3. Once the building plans are complete and the permit is issued, the City will add the new Street tree to the City's Street Tree inventory database.
Requirements
The City maintains a list of designated Street tree species per street citywide, including in the North Bayshore area.
