Sewer Lateral

A sewer lateral is the underground pipe that connects a property's plumbing system to the City sewer system in the street. The grey area is the responsibility of the property owner to maintain and the blue area is maintained by the City.

Any repair or replacement of the plumbing system on private property (up to the property line clean out) requires a building permit. Any repair or replacement from the property line clean out to the City Sewer Main Line requires an excavation permit from Public Works. The property line clean out itself can be repaired or replaced under either permit. However, projects that impact plumbing repairs or replacements on both private property and in the public right-of-way require both permits.
