Hazardous Materials Code
Effective January 1, 2023, all plans submitted to the Building Division for permitting where hazardous materials will be used or stored on-site are required to comply with the following codes and standards, which are adopted in Chapter 24 (Hazardous Materials) in the City Code.
The following Hazardous Materials Inventory Statement (HMIS) form is used by Fire Protection staff in the Building Division to assist in quantifying the hazardous materials, per hazard class and method of storage per hazard class, in a building or building area. The type of hazardous material, the amount stored, and how it is stored or used assists in determining the appropriate occupancy classification of the building or building area. Providing this information with a building/fire permit application will allow us to determine applicable code requirements efficiently.
This form may also assist in determining whether the amounts are exempt from a hazardous (H) occupancy. Areas such as laboratories, manufacturing and assembly areas, storage areas, auto body and repair shops are a examples of places where hazardous materials might be used or stored. Note: All projects requiring the completion of a Declaration of Exemption or Hazardous Materials Management Plan (HMMP) are required to complete the HMIS form.
In addition to occupancy, any business within the City of Mountain View that stores hazardous materials or hazardous waste above any exempt amount is required to obtain a Hazardous Materials Storage Permit from the Fire Department. More information on this permit is available on the Fire Department's webpage.
