Construction Hours
The City regulates the hours of construction activity, which is any physical activity on a construction site or in a staging area, including the delivery of construction materials.
Per Mountain View City Code Section 8.10, construction activity can occur Monday through Friday 7 am to 6 pm. No work is permitted on Saturday unless prior written approval is granted by the Chief Building Official. No construction activity is allowed on Sunday or recognized holidays.
The Chief Building Official may approve modified construction hours and may specifically designate and/or limit the activities permitted during the modified hours.
Any construction activity in a public street or sidewalk, referred to as the public right-of-way, can occur Monday through Friday 7:30 am to 4 pm. Any vehicle or bike lane closure in the public right-of-way must be approved by the City Traffic Engineer. No work is permitted in the public right-of-way on weekends or recognized holidays unless written approval is granted by the City Traffic Engineer. For contractors: Notification to your Public Works Inspector at 650-903-6311 is required at least 2 business days prior to starting construction in the public right-of-way.
Modified Construction Hours
At any time before commencement of or during construction activity:
- The Chief Building Official may modify the permitted hours of construction upon 24 hours written notice to the contractor/applicant/owner. The Chief Building Official can modify the allowable hours of construction activity.
- The City Traffic Engineer may modify the permitted hours of construction for construction activity in the public right-of-way with 24 hour written notice to the contractor/applicant/owner. The City Traffic Engineer can modify the allowable hours of construction activity in the public right-of-way.
Construction Sign Required
The general contractor/applicant/owner must install a construction sign at a prominent location, such as the entrance/exits, on the construction site to advise subcontractors and material suppliers of the construction working hours. The contractor/applicant/owner must produce a copy of the written order or permit from the Chief Building Official regarding construction hours upon the request of any member of the public or City staff.

Violations of the construction hours can be reported to the Building Division at 650-903-6313 during business hours (Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm) or, if related to construction activity in the public street or sidewalk area, can be reported to the Public Works Department at 650-903-6311 (Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm).
